MASTER THESIS
The documentary «Made in Hong Kong» was the central part of my master thesis under Prof. Michael Oppitz. On 30 June 1997—just in time for the handover of Hong Kong to China—the film premiered at Cinema Xenix in Zurich.
Against all expectations, and beyond anything I had dared to hope, the film met with a strong response. Made in Hong Kong was screened in several cinemas across Switzerland. It was also invited to four international film festivals: in Canada (Vancouver), South Korea (Pusan), and Germany (Leipzig, Duisburg). In that sense, the film far exceeded the university context in which it was made. With the written part of my thesis, I try—so to speak—to bring it back to the university.
The above supplementary text to the film «Made in Hong Kong – Master Thesis.pdf» is intended as a tool for students who want to work with the film, and/or who are pursuing their own film project in Visual Anthropology. The text is designed to be read either before or after viewing the film. Personally, I would recommend watching Made in Hong Kong first. It allows you to approach the film as openly as possible, without any preconceptions.
